However, words do not always mean the same thing as their etymology and can stray far from their original meaning. You yourself bring two examples of "bibles" which are nonreligious and each is a single book, not collections of books. "The Bible" in our society is by default the Christian canon. "The Other Bible" implies a book or collection of books equal to "The Bible". Nothing in The Other Bible is scriptural canon to anyone alive except a Mandaean or maybe a neo-Gnostic, people who may not accept the Christian canon as part of their own. I thus stand by my view that The Other Bible is a misleading title.

Also: The Other Bible, so far as I know, does not drive Christian fundamentalists nuts. That would require them to pay attention to it long enough to throw a fuss over it. Not to mention the concept of "heresy" is not limited to Christian fundamentalism by any means. To discuss truth requires that the concept of falsehood (not-truth) also be discussed. Since one can discuss truth within religious systems, matters of falsehood must inevitably be discussed as well. Heresy is just falsehood in a religious system which goes too far.Rupert Hippohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11625972476470777797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-280474378426550212.post-66836951554482941762010-07-23T21:45:14.278+03:002010-07-23T21:45:14.278+03:00You are aware bible simply means "collection ...You are aware bible simply means "collection of books" and as such it is a perfect title for Barnstone's book. What other title would you like? "The ultimate collection of heretical writings driving fundies nuts"?

Can't wait for your review of some other books like "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible" by Edward Smith or "The Capitalist's Bible: The Essential Guide to Free Markets--and Why They Matter to You" by Gretchen Morgenson. Both highly misleading titles that misuse the sacred work "bible".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
